Margaret grew up in a time when opportunities for women were limited, but her curiosity and aptitude for mechanics were apparent from a young age. Tragedy struck early in her life when her father passed away, leaving the family in financial distress. Despite the challenges, Margaret's mother encouraged her daughter's education and interests.

One of Margaret's first inventions was a safety device for textile mills. At the age of 12, she witnessed a horrific accident in a cotton mill involving a worker being impaled by a steel-tipped shuttle.
