1882 - Disappeared with the Company's Money
The Bel Air manufacturing company was greatly surprised this week by the disappearance of a clerk in their store, Timmerman by name, a German 35 years of age, who had been for a year employed in the store and for 8 years employed in the company's factory. It seems that on Monday he took the company's delivery wagon, ostensibly to deliver goods, and drove to New Lebanon, putting up at the Field house where he registered as John F. Martin. From New Lebanon he bought a ticket to Albany and this is the last trace of him. On Tuesday morning, there was received at the post office a postal card mailed at New London, to his wife at Bel Air, stating that he was going to try to better himself and that when he had done so he would write to her. On the receipt of this cad Mr. Gould and another gentleman immediately drove over to Lebanon and found the delivery establishment all right. Timmerman, before his departure, had been making company collections, on his own book, and it is estimated that he ...Read MORE...

1882 - Thief
John Timmerman, the Bel Air clerk who absconded recently with about $300, has written from Chicago to his wife and Mr. Kernochan declined to intercept the letter. It comes to light that Timmerman, worse than the unjust steward, in some cases gave company receipts to his friends for their debts without receiving a cent. Timmerman's wife, a daughter of Mr. Feige, once a partner with Johnson in the bottling business, is greatly saddened and says she cannot understand the affair. Several gentlemen who have reason to know the case regard it as profound mystery. Mannock, the Bel Air merchant, loses more heavily than it was at first supposed.
