US Congressman, US Senator. He served during the Civil War as a Private in Company D, 10th Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry, serving from May 26 to September 1, 1862. He was elected to represent Rhode Island in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1879 to 1881. He was then elected as a Senator from Rhode Island to the United States Senate, serving from 1881 to 1911. He was the father of Congressman Richard Steere Aldrich, US Diplomat Winthrop W. Aldrich, and the grandfather of United States Vice President Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller.
