Obituary
Obituary published in the New Orleans Bee
August 23, 1896, p. 4 (in French), reads:
'Again one who has left us --- almost the last, this one --- of the oldest representatives of the old creole society. The venerable Mr. Joseph N. Robert died yesterday at the age of 85 years not of illness but of old age. He had long been a dealer in fabrics; then, the war having cast his business into disarray, he abandoned that line of business; he became an auctioneer and had set up shop on Decatur street. Mr. J. N. Robert was an old friend of Major Gally and of Dr. Labatut, who died almost a centenarian. He married Miss Amelia. Verret, who gave him four children who survive him: Mr. W. Robert and the Mesdames Songy, Dejean and de Montluzin. Funeral services were held today. The remains were laid in the family tomb in St. Louis cemetery. We extend to the family our expression of sorrowful condolences [translation kindly provided by Sr. Francis Therese, O. Carm. (Ethelyn Meyers)].'
