1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

'Suffield Conn., April 4 - Mrs. Irene C. (Crouss) Cesan, 58, of Freda Hollister Dr., formerly of Agawam, Mass., died at Springfield Hospital Monday morning. She was born in Agawam, March 16, 1897, the daughter of Charles T. and Fanny (Kathan) Crouss and had been a lifelong resident of Agawam until moving to Suffield a year and a half ago. She was a member of the Feeding Hills Congregational Church and a former member of the Agawam Baptist Church, where she was active in young people's work and in the Church Sunday School. During the war years she was active in the American Red Cross and was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary and of the Women's Republican Club. Besides her husband, David E. Cesan, she leaves a daughter, Miss Ruth Irene Cesan of Hartford, Conn.; two sons, David T. Cesan and John S. Cesan of Feeding Hills; two brothers, Theodore A. Crouss of West Springfield...Read MORE...

'The funeral of Mrs. Irene C. (Crouss) Cesan of Freda Hollister Dr., Suffield, formerly of Agawam, will be in Feeding Hills Congregational Church Thursday at 2 with an organ prelude. Rev. Frank E. Dunn will officiate. Burial will be in Springfield Street Cemetery, Feeding Hills. The family will receive friends at the Dickinson Streeter funeral home tonight from 7 to 9 p. m.'

Feeding Hills Church Receives $10,000 Fund
'Agawam, Jan. 31 - The establishment of a $10,000 memorial fund was announced tonight at the annual meeting of the Feeding Hills Congregational Church. The fund will be known as the 'David E. and Irene (Crouss) Cesan Memorial Fund'.'

'The income will be used for the maintenance and when necessary, renovation, of the church sanctuary. The fund was presented by David E. Cesan in memory of his late wife.'
