Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

'Ernestine F. 'Ernie' (Welcome) Johnson, 72, of 26 Springmeadow Lane died Tuesday at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. She was a Hampden correspondent for The Springfield Newspapers, and had been a secretary to the late Thornton W. Burgess, famed children's author. She was an attendant at Monson State Hospital for 15 years, and a former librarian here and in Monson.

Born in Westfield, she was a 1942 graduate of Westfield High School. She spent several years in East Longmeadow before moving here in 1957.

She worshipped at the Federated Church, and was a Sunday school teacher and former vice president of its Ladies Aid Society.

She was chairwoman of Hampden Heart Fund and Cancer Society drives; a former president of the Garden Club and the East Longmeadow American Legion Auxiliary; a...Read MORE...
