The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. 'Born May 16, 1915 in Meridan, CT, he was the son of Katharine Bourgarde LaPointe and Dr. John Henry LaPointe. He graduated from Duke University in 1938 and joined The American Brass Company in Waterbury, CT. In 1943, he was commissioned in the U.S. Navy as an ensign and rose to Lieutenant before discharge at the wass end. He returned to the American Brass Company and was sent to Charlotte in 1949 to open a new office. In 1959, he resigned and started a new company called Thermo Plastics. Then in 1963, he bought Industrial Valve and Gauge and as owner, developed it into Summit Corporation. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Charlotte City Club, Myers Park Country Club, and Quail Hollow Country Club, serving on the Board of both...Read MORE...
