Among the younger merchants of Pittsfield who have won recognition as men of superior business capacity, the gentleman whose name introduces this narrative may be appropriately numbered. He was born in Pittsfield, January 16, 1876, son of the late George W. and Ida (Mills) Edwards, the former a native of Laconia, New Hampshire, the latter a daughter of the late Josiah Mills, who was a prominent lawyer of Chatham, New York.

The late George W. Edwards was a soldier in the Civil War, serving as first lieutenant in the Twelfth Regiment New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. Locating in Pittsfield, he purchased Washington Root the jewelry business that had been established by the latter in 1848 at No. 44 North street, and this business was continued bye Mr. Edwards at the location named during the remainder of his life, becoming the leading industry of its kind in Berkshire county.
