"GLENHEIM, the home of Dr. Albert Leffingwell, embraces nearly twenty acres, extending from the main street in the village of Aurora, nearly half a mile to the top of the hill. The residence, considerably improved by the presdent owner, is of brick and stone, and its broad piazzas, shaded by chestnut trees, overlooks Cayuga Lake. The house was built in 1827 by Hon. Eleazer Burnham, a distinguished early resident of Cayuga County, who was twice chosen as a Presidential elector; it was occupied by him for forty years, passing by his death to his nephew, James Burnham Smith, and becoming the residence of Dr. Leffingwell in May, 1896. Nearby is a small building, which a century ago was the law office of Judge Walter Wood, and here Millard Fillmore, afterward President of the United States, first began the study of law. On the same premises, and on the north, is one of the oldest houses of the village. It was the birthplace of Hon. Edwin B. Morgan in 1806, and the upper floor served for several years previous to 1816 as the Masonic Lodge."

Millard Fillmore, a wool and cloth carder apprentice and self-educated son of a hardtimes farmer in 1819 moved with his father from his boyhood home in New Hope to Montville. Montville with its ample water power was then the hub of industry in the area. The local entrepreneur of Montville was Judge Walter Wood who had served as the first judge of Cayuga County from 1810 to 1817.
Wood and his wife, Paulina Mosher Wood, had been among the first Quakers to arrive in Cayuga County and he was appointed deputy clerk of Onondaga County that same year, 1794. He settled in Aurora and led the unsuccessful drive to have Aurora remain the county seat after Seneca County was created in 1804. He encouraged the Pace brothers to establish their...Read MORE...

...No date is given this clipping found among Floyd M. Reynolds papers. 'An interesting advertisement has come to light regarding the little settlement of Montville, just north of Moravia on Rt. 38A.
The settlement is very old, was noted for its variety of manufacturers due to nearby waterpower along Goodrich or Montville creek.
Judge Walter Wood, noted Quaker lawyer, moved to Montville from Aurora in 1811. In 1812, he built the large house on the northeast corner of Rt. 38A and Dresserville Road.
Wood died here Sept. 18, 1827. It was then known as 'Mansion House' by his son Isaac.
The old advertisement in the Cayuga Patriot of Nov. 21, 1832, states that Eleazer Burnham and Isaac Wood offer for sale the Montville property of the late Walter Wood.
The property consists of a farm of about 180 acres Whereon is a neat and compact village, containing about 35 framed buildings, dwelling houses, store, tavern, together with grist mill, saw mill and wooden factory all in good...Read MORE...
