...No date is given this clipping found among Floyd M. Reynolds papers. "An interesting advertisement has come to light regarding the little settlement of Montville, just north of Moravia on Rt. 38A.

The settlement is very old, was noted for its variety of manufacturers due to nearby waterpower along Goodrich or Montville creek.

Judge Walter Wood, noted Quaker lawyer, moved to Montville from Aurora in 1811. In 1812, he built the large house on the northeast corner of Rt. 38A and Dresserville Road.

Wood died here Sept. 18, 1827. It was then known as "Mansion House" by his son Isaac.

The old advertisement in the Cayuga Patriot of Nov. 21, 1832, states that Eleazer Burnham and Isaac Wood offer for sale the Montville property of the late Walter Wood.

The property consists of a farm of about 180 acres Whereon is a neat and compact village, containing about 35 framed buildings, dwelling houses, store, tavern, together with grist mill, saw mill and wooden factory all in good repair.

The property also contained tracts of timber. Persons wishing particulars asked to contact Josiah Woodworth residing in the "Mansion House"."
