Miss Carmel Wed to J. C. Berry

SOUTHBRIDGE - Miss Rita Ann Carmel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Felix P. Carmel of 125 High St., became the bride of John Clayton Berry yesteday morning in Notre Dame Church. Mrs. Clayton E. Berry of Fiske Hill, Sturbridge.

The reception was at the Hamilton Rod and Gun Club.

Miss Jacqueline Poirier was maid of honor, and bridesmaids were Miss Doris Lippe and Miss Sylvia Tremblay. John O'Toole of Roslindale served as best man.

Following a motor trip, they will live on Charlton Road in Dudley.

The bride is a graduate of Mary E. Wells High School and is employed in the offices of the Globe Tool and Die Co. The bridegroom, a graduate of Cole Trade High School, is employed by American Optical Co.

Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Dudley: John C. “Jack” Berry, 85, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 22nd, at Lanessa Extended Care, Webster, after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 62 years, Rita A. (Carmel) Berry; his two daughters, Sandra L. Allen and her husband James of Charlton and Lori Smith of Dudley; his son, Michael J. Berry of Dudley; his son-in-law, Craig Smith of Thompson, CT; his six grandchildren, Erin Rim and her husband Richland, Kelly Derrick and her husband Mat, Chad Smith and his wife Emily, Timothy Allen and his wife Amanda, Becky Terzian and her husband Edward and Jessica Gregorczyk and her husband Stephen; and his 11 great grandchildren, Logan Rim, Reese Rim, Myles Derrick, Easton Derrick, Jospehine Smith, Matthew Allen, Andrew Allen, Mia Terzien, Max Terzien, Ella Terzian and Lily Gregorczyk. He was born in Southbridge the son of Clayton E. and Christine F. (Walsh) Berry. He was a graduate of the former Cole Trade High School in Southbridge.
