Biography
COUILLARD DE LESPINAY, GUILLAUME, carpenter, seaman, and caulker, son of Guillaume Couillard and Élisabeth de Vesins, son-in-law of Louis Hébert; native of Saint-Malo or of the parish of Saint-Landry in Paris; b. c. 1591; d. 1663 at Quebec.
Couillard married Guillemette, daughter of Louis Hébert, at Quebec, about 26 Aug. 1621. By her he had 10 children, and because of the numerous descendants of these children Couillard appears in the genealogy of almost all the old French-Canadian families.
He had come to Canada about 1613 according to Champlain, who spoke highly of him in 1628. Couillard was one of the first to settle permanently in the colony. Louis Hébert, the first farmer, arrived at Quebec only in 1617. After his death in 1627, Couillard took over from him the farming of his lands, having inherited, through his wife, half of Hébert’s estate. Moreover, in the same year (1627) Champlain also granted to Couillard, for personal reasons, “a hundred acres of land to clear and...Read MORE...

Biography
ON AUGUST 26, 1621, Guillaume Couillard de Lespinay married in Quebec, Guillemette daughter of Louis Hébert. They had ten children, whose numerous descendants make him appear in the genealogy of almost every old Quebec family. He arrived in New France in 1613, 4 years before Louis Hébert. Couillard was therefore one of the first established inhabitants in the colony. After the death of Louis Hébert in 1627, Couillard raised him up in the culture of his lands, having inherited half of the heritage by his wife. In the same year, Champlain again granted Couillard, in his personal capacity, 'one hundred arpents of land to desert and seed' on the banks of the Saint-Charles River. This colon had nearly 20 arpents in cultivation starting in 1632 and a flour mill in 1639. He had been the first to use the plow in the spring of 1628. In 1643, he was making lime for the Company of Hundred Associates. At the capture of Quebec in 1629, Guillaume Couillard's family was one of the few families who...Read MORE...

1632 - 'The (I)-Guillaume Couillard Lespinacy (1591-1663) and Herbert family is believed to be the first slave owners in New France...'
'The Couillard-Hébert family receives the first slave of the colony. He is a Black boy from the West Indies. The historian Marcel Trudel has counted 4092 slaves throughout Canadian history, of which 2692 were Indians (the favorites of French-speakers) and 1400 Blacks (the favorites of English-speakers) owned by approximately 1400 masters. The region of Montréal dominates with 2077 slaves compared to 1059 for Québec and 114 for Trois-Rivières. Many were held by religious orders. Several marriages took place between French colonists and slaves (31 unions between with Indian slaves and 8 with Black slaves) which means that a number of Québécois today have slaves somewhere in their family trees.
