Starting his career in caramel candy production, Hershey quickly recognized the potential in chocolate-making after attending the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where he observed chocolate-making machinery. Returning to his hometown of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Hershey set out to perfect the art of milk chocolate production, aiming to create a product that was affordable and accessible to the masses.

Hershey's breakthrough came with the development of a specific process to produce milk chocolate, using fresh milk sourced from nearby dairy farms.
