(AP)-William F. Bowen, 80, who invented a 'zipper' ? slide fastener in 1905 so his wife could fasten the ? back of her shirtwaist, died today. ? Clarence Staples was notified'this morning. She said her father; whose hook- less fastener was not entirely metal as are present : types, formed the Bowen Mfg. Co. In Melrose, Mass, to' produce his invention but sole out in 1920 because 'he didn't make much of a success of it at the last. He lived in Riverside until two years ago, when he went to Portland to make his home with another daughter, Mrs. Dorothea Bowen. A third daughter, Mrs. Helen Mondeau of Brockton, Mass., and three sons, Warren F. Bowen 'of Portland and William F. and Alfred W. Bowen of South Portland, survive.
