Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Barbara (Pratt) Muirhead died on Thursday, (January 10, 2002) at Masonic Geriatric Facility in Wallingford where she spent the last four years of her life under the loving care of nurses and staff; born in West Hartford, daughter of Elizabeth and John Hugelman, June 20, 1917; wife of Raymond A. Pratt and John J. Muirhead, both deceased, student of metaphysics and 40 year member of the Christian Science Mother Church, Boston, MA; worked many years within the insurance industry for both Aetna and Traveler's Insurance Companies in Hartford, was active in the Republican Party and Parent Teacher's Associations in East Hartford. She leaves two children who loved her dearly, Richard K. Pratt, recently retired and living in North Carolina, Marjorie P. Rutkoski of East Hampton; and three grandchildren, Lynn Rutkoski of Maui, Hawaii, Kimberly A. Pratt of Washington, D.C. and Rich Y. Pratt of Atlanta, GA. MUIRHEAD. John J. Muirhead, Sr., 79, of East Hartford passed away Tuesday (Feb. 25, 1997). He was the husband or Barbara Pratt Muirhead and the late Margaret (Schaub) Muirhead. Born in Manchester, he had resided in East Hartford for the past 37 years. He was a former communicant of St. Christopher Church, East Hartford. Prior to his retirement, he was employed for 30 years by John Hancock Life Insurance Company. Besides his wife, Barbara, Mr. Muirhead is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Denise Muirhead of Haddam, John Jr. and Coleen Muirhead of Manchester, David and Tamaria Muirhead of New Hartford; two stepchildren and their spouses, Richard and Roxanne Pratt of East Hartford, Marge and Walter Rutkowski of East Hampton; 12 grandchildren, Rick, Cynthia, and Michael Muirhead; Melissa, John III, and David Muirhead; Matt, Logan, and Margaret Kelsey Muirhead; Richard and Kimberly Pratt; and Lynn Rutkowski.
