1881 - July 2 - James A. Garfield was shot at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, D.C., at 9:30 am on Saturday, July 2, 1881. He died in Elberon, New Jersey, two months later on September 19, 1881. The shooting occurred less than four months into his term as president. Charles J. Guiteau was convicted of Garfield's murder and executed by hanging one year after the shooting. Chester Arthur becomes President of the United States.

Former Pittsfield Resident Spent Most of Life in Western Massachusetts.

Pittsfield, Dec. 15 - Mrs Mary C. Heather, wife of Jacob C. Heather, former resident of Pittsfield, died yesterday afternoon at the home of her son, Walter J. Heather at Xenia, O. She was born at Pittsfield and had spent most of her life in this city. She attended St. Charles church.

She leaves her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Arthur M. Magner of this city and Miss Blanche Heather of Xenia and Clifford J. Heather of New York city and seven sisters, Mrs Cordelia Mountain and Mrs John Fraley of this city ans Sister Mary of Egypt of St Johnsbury, Vt., and the Misses Emily, Rose and Minnie Fairfield and Mrs John Gariepy of Montreal, Can. and two brothers, Arthur Fairfield of Naugatuck, Ct., and Albert Fairfield of North Adams.
