1961 - Vietnam War officially begins with 900 military advisors landing in Saigon.

1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense 13-day standoff in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the U.S. coast. The crisis is considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war. It began when American spy planes discovered the missiles, leading to a U.S. naval blockade of Cuba and intense negotiations. The crisis ended when Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba and secretly agreeing to remove American missiles from Turkey.

The scandal led to the discovery of multiple abuses of power by the Nixon administration, the resignation of President Nixon in 1974, and the indictment of several administration officials.

MIDDLETOWN — Scott Francis Otwell 40 of 65 Hillside Ave died suddenly Saturday Feb 14-1998 in his home. He was born in Meriden May 28 1957 a son of Scott H Otwell Jr of Meriden and the late Shirley E Otwell. In high school he held many records as a member of the Platt High School swim team He attended Northwestern University the bass guitar and leased two CD's compiled of music he had composed and arranged featuring several local bands His sense of humor will be missed. Besides his father, he is survived by a daughter Amelia Lynn Otwell and two sons Trevor Jon Otwell and Collin Otwell all of Meriden; a sister and brother-in-law Lynn S and Jerry Molinas of Meriden; a brother and sister-in-law James Kevin and Lisa Otwell of Southington and his best friend Rick Messina of Wallingford. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 9:15 am at the Beecher & Bennett Flatow Funeral Home 48 Cook Ave, Meriden and at 10 am at St Joseph Church for a Mass of Christian burial.
