The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. MERIDEN - Scott H. Otwell, 84, husband of the late Shirley E. (Habershon) Otwell, died on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, at Middlesex Hospital.

He was born June 30, 1927, in East Point, Ga., a son of the late Scott H, and Della (Attaway) Otwell Sr. Scott went to Russell High School where he was a member of R.O.T.C. his entire time there. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and caught the last fifteen months of World War II. When the war ended he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, and was stationed in Boston, where he met his wife Shirley and married in 1948. In 1949 he moved to Meriden where he spent the next 62 years. Scott was an electrician by trade, but ended up being a teamster from where he retired in 1978. During retirement Scott became a rather good dancer, and has trophies to verify it. He also had a passion for golf and was a member of Lyman Meadows Golf Club for thirty years. Scott's ability to make people laugh, along with his own cry of laughter will be missed.
