1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

SLATTERY, JOSEPH F. - Joseph F. Slattery of Congers, after a long battle with cancer, died September 22, 2002. Born August 1, 1929 Joe was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, served in NYPD for 27 years rising to the rank of captain and was an agent for the U.S. Justice Department and the Environmental Protection Agency. A proud son of Erin, Joe was an avid carpenter, a golfer and lover of books and history. He was selfless of his time and talent, always ready to lend a hand. Joe is survived by his wife Lillian with whom he shared 51 years of love, companionship and friendship, his loving family of seven children Kathleen Whelan of Central Nyack, Dennis Slattery of Vestal, NY, Mary Bennett of No. Attleboro, MA, Louis Slattery of Highland Falls, Joni Harter of West Nyack, Joseph Slattery, Jr. of Mt.
