While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

DOW - Emma Lucy Gibb, beloved wife of Mr. William Dow of 1122 7 St. N., passed away in the city on June 14 (NOTE: Cemetery record shows death date as June 11), at the age of 72 years.
Mrs. Dow was born in Lehi, Utah and came to Raymond in 1901 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John L. Gibb. In 1914 she married William Dow. They settled in the Magrath area until 1926. They moved to the Diamond City area the same year where Mr. Dow operated a farm until 1960 when they retired and moved into Lethbridge.
Besides her husband, William, she is survived by six sons, Leo, Berne, Gordon and Blaine all of Lethbridge, Richard of Montreal and Jack of Vancouver; seven daughters., Mrs. Lawrence (Wilma) Lawlor of Turin, Mrs. Ernie (Luzan) Redding and Mrs. William (Maxine) Campbell, both of Edmonton, Mrs. Kenneth (Joyce) Blair of Lethbridge, Melchin and Mrs. Gordon (June) Sivertsen both of Calgary and Mrs. Glen (Margaret) Rimmer of Banff; two brothers, Dave Gibb of Ellensburg, Wash, and George...Read MORE...
