Alvin J. Gagnon, head of Veterans Service: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

Alvin J. Gagnon Jr., 68, of 21 Davenport St. died Saturday at Mercy Hospital in Springfield. He was a commissioner and director for the Chicopee Veterans Service Department since 1976. He was the executive director for the Goodwill Industries from 1964 until 1976. He was previously a rehabilitation specialist for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Leeds.

He was a mental disabilities supervisor for Massachusetts Rehabilitation from 1959 until 1964.

He began his career as an investigator for the Chicopee Veterans Service Department. He was a lifelong resident here.

He was graduate of Wilbraham Academy and received his bachelor's degree from American International College in Springfield. He earned his master's in education and rehabilitation counseling from Springfield College. He received degrees in municipal management and computer training from the University of Massachusetts Institute of Government Service.

He was a communicant of the Holy Name of Jesus Church. He was a trustee for the Soldiers Home in Holyoke.

He was a member and treasurer of the Chicopee Veterans Memorial and Patriotic Committee. He was a member and past executive committee member for the Massachusetts Veterans Service Agent Association. He was a member and executive committee member of the Western Massachusetts Veterans Service Officers Association where he was also past president.

He belonged to the American Legion post 353, the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 19 and the Knights of Columbus council 69.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a second lieutenant.

He leaves his wife, the former Mary Anne Dupois; three sons, Richard J. of Pawcatuck, R.I., Thomas J. of Altamont, N.Y., and David J. of Chicopee; two daughters, Rosemary Nestor of Ludlow and Joanne Gagnon of Holyoke; a sister, T. Anne Gagnon of Springfield; and seven grandchildren.

The funeral is Tuesday morning at the Grise Funeral Home followed by a Mass in Holy Name Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery.
