The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Raymond G. 'Ray' Crouss, 75, Bradenton, died Nov. 5, 2003.

He was born Dec. 16, 1927, in Agawam, Mass., and came to Manatee County in 1992 from Plymouth, Mass. He retired after 50 years as a retail manager and vice president for several retail stores, most recently at Bealls. He was a Navy Air Corp veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Florence a son, William of Friday Harbor, Wash. a brother, Leslie of Agawam and two grandchildren.

The memorial service will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bradenton. National Cremation Society, Sarasota chapter, is in charge.
