Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' SOUTHBRIDGE - Joseph Omer Renaud, 93, of Riverview Drive, formerly of 67 Breezy Lane, Quinebaug Mobil Home Park in Thompson, a 50-year foreman at American Optical Co., died Monday at home after a long illness.

He leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond L. and Jeanne Renaud, with whom he lived; a sister, Irene Gamache of Southbridge; and a grandson. He was born in Southbridge, son of Israel and Mary D. (Leduc) Renaud, and lived here and in Quinebaug for 20 years before moving back to Southbridge in 1995. He graduated from Mary E. Wells High School.

Mr. Renaud was a foreman at American Optical Co. for 50 years, retiring in 1967. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. He was also a member of Wellsworth Athletic Association and American Optical Quarter Century Club.

The funeral will be held today from Sansoucy Funeral Home, 40 Marcy St., with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Sacred...Read MORE...
