Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

DUDLEY – Jayne O. (Korch) Plaza, 93, died Friday, September 26, 2014 in Lanessa Extended Care with family at her side. Her husband of almost 70 years, Stephen F. Plaza, Sr., died in 2013. She leaves 3 children, Bette J. Plaza of St. Albans, Maine, Joseph E. Plaza and his wife Marietta of Hampton, NH, and Shirley A. Wagner and her husband David of Epsom, NH; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Stephen F. Plaza, Jr. in 2003. She was born and raised in Webster, the oldest of the 9 children of George and Mae (Ostberg) Korch, and moved to Dudley in 1950. She attended Bartlett High School. Mrs. Plaza was a production worker at Bates Shoe in Webster for many years. Besides being a homemaker, she was the office manager for her husband’s business, Webster Machine Products Company, Inc., for 18 years before retiring. She was a member of Saint Andrew Bobola Church.
