Did You Know? Québec Généalogie - What is a 'dit/dite' name?  When the first settlers came to Québec from France it was a custom to add a 'dit' nickname to the surname. The English translation of 'dit' is 'said'. The Colonists of Nouvelle France added 'dit' names as distinguishers. A settler might have wanted to differentiate their family from their siblings by taking a 'dit' name that described the locale to which they had relocated. The acquiring of a 'dit' name might also be the result of a casual adoption, whereby the person wanted to honor the family who had raised them. Another reason was also to distinguish themselves by taking as a 'dit' name the town or village in France from which they originated. This custom ended around 1900 when people began using only one name, either the 'dit' nickname or their original surname.

Their daughter, Marie-Louise Renaud married Étienne Rotureau-Bélisle, son of ÉtienneRotureau-Belisle and Angélique Nantel on November 17, 1783 in Terrebonne, Québec. They had one child.

Their daughter Archange Rotureau-Belislem married Jacques Martin-Versailles son of Gabriel Martin and Marie-anne Gagnon on February 6, 1804 in Ste-Anne-des-Plaines, Québec. They had six children.

Their son Joseph Martin-Versailles born 1818 married Émilie Bertrand daughter of Jacques Bertrand and Angélique Lemyre-Marsolais January 13, 1842 in Montréal, Québec. They had two children.

Their son Joseph Versailles born on December 15, 1842 married Alice Beaudoin daughter of Jacques Beaudoin and Marie-Louise Laforêt-Labranche on September 19, 1864 in Montréal, Québec. They had five children.

Their son Hyacinthe-Avila Versailles born January 24, 1866 in Montréal, Québec married Marie-Anne-Joséphine Gagnon daughter of Pierre Gagnon and Élizabeth Rhéaume on December 25, 1895 in Lowell Mass. USA. They had two children.

Their daughter Marie-Angélina Versailles born June 4 1898 in Lowell Mass. USA. married Joseph-Henri-Nicole son of Alezandre Nicole and Joséphine-Philomène Brousseau January 7, 1920 in Montréal, Québec.
They had one child Joseph-Philippe-Henri Nicol.
