1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' CUMBERLAND Florence R. DeLauder, 84, of 300 Broadway, passed away Monday at home. Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Philias and Marie (Mercier) Girouard. She was a life-long Pawtucket resident. Mrs. DeLauder was a Assistant Special Education Teacher, for the Fallon School of Pawtucket for 20 years, retiring in 1990. She was a communicant of Blessed Pope John Paul II Parish of Pawtucket. Mrs. Delauder was one of the founding members of the first Free Healthcare Clinics for underprivileged families in Pawtucket, the Woodlawn Teen Center, as well as the Leon Mathieu Center. She was an active volunteer at the Haven Hill Nursing Center, now known as Pawtucket Healthcare and Rehabilitation. She leaves her son, David DeLauder and his spouse Susan of Cumberland; two daughters, Lorraine DeLauder and her spouse Faye Silverman of Pawtucket, and Marlene Lenartowicz and her spouse Walter Lenartowicz of Lincoln; one brother, Ernest Girouard of Cumberland, one sister, Albina Angeli ...Read MORE...
