Biography
ON SEPTEMBER 3, 1713, birth of Jean-Baptiste Gaultier de La Vérendrye. He is the eldest son of Pierre Gaultier de Varennes and La Vérendrye, fur merchant and explorer. In 1731, he was a member of the first group to go West under his father's command. He builds forts, explores the region and trades fur. On June 5, 1736, he left with Father Aulneau and 19 others, including allies of the Cris tribe, to go get provisions in Michilimakinac. The group is attacked by Sioux warriors and all are killed on a small island in Lake of the Woods.
