Biography
GAUDRAULT/ GAUDREAU/ GAUDREAULT - softened contraction of GAUTREAU, itself, derived from GAUDIER, which comes from the Germanic name WALDHARI, composed of 'wald' which means 'to govern', and 'hari' which means 'army'.

Gilles Gaudreau-Gotreau was born in 1644 in Sainte-Catherine de la Flotte, Île de Ré, France. Son of Jean Gaudreau and Marie Roher, he married Anne Pineau dit La Vieville, daughter of Jean Pineau and Anne Leclerc, on October 15, 1671 in Sainte-Famille on Île d'Orléans. From their union were born 6 children. In second weddings, he marries Catherine Renusson, widow of Augustin Alonze. He arrived in the country aboard the ship 'Le Cat de Hollande' in Quebec on June 18, 1665. He settled on Île d'Orléans. In 1681, he settled on land in the seigneury of Vincelotte (Cap St-Ignace). He died at Cap-Saint-Ignace on November 10, 1726.
