Barbara McClintock was a pioneering geneticist whose work revolutionized our understanding of genetics and won her the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1983. Born on June 16, 1902, in Hartford, Connecticut, McClintock grew up in a family that valued education. Her father, a physician, and her mother, a suffragist, instilled in her a love for learning and a sense of independence.
McClintock attended Cornell University, where she studied botany and genetics. She earned her Ph.D. in botany in 1927, and her early research focused on the cytogenetics of maize (corn). McClintock's groundbreaking work began in the 1930s when she developed techniques to stain and visualize maize chromosomes. This allowed her to identify and map specific genes on the chromosomes.
