Louis  FONTAINE

Biography
FOUNTAINE - from the Latin 'fontana' which means 'from the source'. Nickname given to someone who lived near a fountain, a water source.

Louis Fontaine, son of Louis and Marie Nion of Dieppe, in Normandie, married in Quebec on October 29, 1656 Marie Madeleine Brassard, daughter of Antoine and Françoise Méry, baptized in Quebec in 1642. Twenty children were born from this union (including triplets who did not survive). He was in the country from 1651, because he bought land on February 2, 1652 at Côte Ste-Catherine but he sold it before his marriage to begin his career as a navigator. He settled in Rivière St-Charles, and if he obtained a few properties (Grande Allée, Cap-Rouge, etc.), it was his wife who took care of them during his frequent absences. He died in Quebec on September 4, 1681.
