BERNARD - Strong or brave as a bear. Derived from the first name of German origin, 'Bernharding' was originally from the words 'beran' which means bear, and 'hardu' which means brave or strong. Other known spellings: BARNARD, BERNART, BERNDSEN, BERNHARD, BERNHARDT, BERNAERT
André Bernard (1644-1724) Born June 12, 1644 in the St-Barthélémi parish of La Rochelle in France, son of André Bernard and Marie Dalezay, he married in Quebec on November 26, 1676, Marie Gitton, daughter of Denis Giton and Marie Pain, also from La Rochelle. From their union four children were born. He arrived in the country in January 1664. In 1672, he bought a dwelling of 2 arpents with a shed and all the grain therein, on Île d'Orléans for the sum of 50 pounds. This land is located between those of Marin Gervais and Élie Dussault. In 1681, he owned two cattle and four acres of cultivated land. His death occurred on May 24, 1724.
