MOREAU – Contraction of Morineau, nickname given to an individual with a more or less dark complexion, in reference to the Moorish people, encountered during the crusades. Also, from the Latin 'Maurellus', from Maurus which means the Mauritanian, again the nickname of a dark-skinned individual. Finally, can come from the name of several localities in France.
Louis Moreau was baptized on January 6, 1647 in St-Georges-du-Bois, Charente-Maritime, France. Son of François Moreau and Françoise Tébault-Dubout, he married Élisabeth Gagnon, daughter of Robert Gagnon and Marie Parenteau, on February 21, 1678 on Île d'Orléans. From this union were born 2 children. Hired in La Rochelle as a tailor, he arrived in the country in 1668. He lived in Château-Richer and the Côte-de-Lauzon. In 1681, he owned 3 horned animals. He died as a result of an accident that occurred in his house in Côte-de-Lauzon on January 12, 1683 and was buried in Quebec three days later.
