Biography
William Clark was an American explorer, soldier, and public official best known for his role as the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Born on August 1, 1770, in Caroline County, Virginia, Clark grew up in a family with a strong military tradition. His older brother, George Rogers Clark, was a Revolutionary War hero, and his family had a history of military service.
In 1785, at the age of 14, Clark joined the Virginia militia and began his military career. He later served in the regular army and became a second lieutenant. During the Northwest Indian War, he served under General Anthony Wayne and gained valuable experience in frontier warfare.
Clark's most famous expedition, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, took place from 1804 to 1806. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase and find a practical route to the Pacific Ocean.
