1944 - D-Day, which occurred on June 6, 1944, was a pivotal World War II operation where Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. Known as Operation Overlord, it involved over 156,000 troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other Allied nations. The operation aimed to liberate Western Europe from Nazi German control. The landings marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany, leading to the eventual Allied victory in Europe.

1945 - The atomic bomb is invented (J. Robert Oppenheimer, et al., United States)

The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Robert Joseph Hugh LaPierre 83, of North Adams passed away on Sunday August 7, 2016 at the Berkshire Medical Center North. He was born in North Adams Ma. on April 11, 1933 a son of the late Joseph and Pauline (Stanisky) Lapierre. He was a Korean War veteran serving with the United States Army as a Corporal and was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1955. Bob graduated from the Franklin Institute where he went for 12 years at night,while working two jobs. He then obtained his bachelors of Science degree in 1972 from North Adams State College. Bob also took classes at Williams College. He was employed at Sprague Electric Co. as a wage and compensation manager. After Sprague closed he was employed as a sales associate at Sears Roebuck in Lanesboro. Bob was a third degree Mason with the Greylock Lodge and member of the Order of Mount Moriah in the year 1967.He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of...Read MORE...
