Gertrude Anna MCKENNA died 11 October 1942, Lewiston, Maine, USA
Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Former Lewiston Alderman Succumbs After Long Illness
Ill since last March, Theophile Thomas Malenfant, 73, of 20 Whipple Street, former Lewiston alderman, died at the St. Regis Home, Auburn, at 8:30 Wednesday morning.

Though a native of Isle Verte, P.Q., the son of Bruno and Celine Cote Malefant, most of his life was spent here. He served two terms as alderman and also was a call man in the Lewiston Fire Department from 1905 to 1937.

He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Church, Dirigo Aerie, F.O.E., and the Lewiston Firemen's Relief Association.

Mr. Malefant married Gertrude Anna McKenna and her death occurred in 1942.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Flavius B. Hubbard, Auburn; two sisters, Mrs. J. B. Fortin, Auburn, and Sister Gontran di Sion, Kansas City, Mo.; and a brother, David, Washington, D.C.
