Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. Experimenting further, he discovered microwaves could cook food quickly. Raytheon patented the process, and by 1947, they built the first commercial microwave oven, called the 'Radarange.' Initially used in commercial settings, microwaves becomes affordable for home use by the 1960s and 1970s, revolutionizing cooking.

Frances Mary Blessing, 92, previously of Burnbrook Road, East Hartford, CT, and of Atria Greenridge Place, Rocky Hill, CT, respectively, died Monday, February 20, 2017, at St. Francis Hospital, in Hartford, CT. Born June 25, 1924, to Mary (Stafford) and Frank Blessing, Frances was a wonderful, loving, cheerful and supportive, daughter, sister, and aunt to many nieces and nephews. Frances was the one who made our family a family. Frances spent her career at Travelers Insurance Company. She was a communicant of St. Christopher Church in East Hartford, (contributing handmade crafts and ornaments for events), a member of the Grange, a supporter of CPTV, and an avid fan of the UCONN girls' basketball team. She took great joy in her flower, vegetable and fruit gardens, and visiting birds. Frances is predeceased by her sisters, Ruth Crawford of Needham, MA, Hazel Anderson of East Hartford, CT, and Esther Cody of Hartford, CT, and by her brother, Robert Blessing of East Hartford, CT.
