Invention The microwave oven was invented accidentally in 1945 by Percy Spencer, a Raytheon engineer. While testing a magnetron, he noticed microwaves melted a candy bar in his pocket. 71, of Manchester, passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on Jan. 30, 2011, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was the beloved wife of Allan T. Hooey.

Shirley was born in Manchester on Nov. 12, 1939, daughter of the late Raymond and Bernice Hagenow. Shirley was a graduate of Manchester High School and a lifelong resident of Manchester. Before her retirement in 2007, Shirley had worked 36 years for the Town of Manchester, Food and Nutrition Services. Shirley held the position as cafeteria manager at Manchester High School.

Besides her husband, Allan, of 51 years; Shirley is survived by her daughter, Laureen Cohen and her husband, Max, of Coventry; and her son, Dale Hooey and his fiance, Anita Piacenta, of Manchester. She was the loving grandmother of Lyndsay, Brittney, and Garrett Cohen of Coventry, Taylor, Corodon and Mitchell Hooey of Manchester....Read MORE...
