Biography

George Washington Goethals (1858-1928) was a prominent American civil engineer and U.S. Army officer best known for his role in the construction of the Panama Canal. Born on June 29, 1858, in Brooklyn, New York, Goethals graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1880 and began his career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Goethals first gained recognition for his work on river and harbor improvements. His engineering expertise and leadership abilities led to his appointment as the chief engineer of the Panama Canal project in 1907, following a period of struggling efforts under previous administrations. Under Goethals' leadership, the canal's construction overcame significant technical, logistical, and health challenges, including controlling malaria and yellow fever among workers.

The successful completion of the Panama Canal in 1914 stands as Goethals' most notable achievement. His management style and innovative engineering solutions played a crucial role in finishing the canal ahead of schedule and within budget.

After his work on the Panama Canal, Goethals continued to serve in various capacities, including as the first governor of the Panama Canal Zone. During World War I, he was appointed as the acting quartermaster general of the U.S. Army, overseeing logistics and supply operations for American forces.

George Washington Goethals passed away on January 21, 1928, leaving behind a legacy as one of America's most distinguished civil engineers and a pivotal figure in the history of engineering and infrastructure development.
