Richard Crowninshield DERBY
Obituary
"THE LATE RICHARD C. DERBY.
This gentleman, who will be remembered by many of our citizens, died in Philadelphia on Tuesday, 4th inst., in the 78th year of his age. He has resided at Newport, Rhode Island, during the last few years of his life.
Mr. Derby was a native of Salem. He made in early life the tour of Europe, and during repeated visits to the continent cultivated a taste for music, statuary and painting, which for the last half century has made his house the resort of strangers and men of genius.
His remains have been deposited in the rural cemetery of St. James-the-Less, near Philadelphia, pursuant to the directions of a will. He leaves many legacies to friends and relatives, and the following bequests to public charities in Boston: To the Boston Farm School, $5000; to the Boston Female Orphan Asylum, $2500; to Rev. John T. Sargent, of Boston, for distribution among the poor, $5000.
Frank and cordial in his manners and benevolent in his disposition, many will remember him with gratitude.-Boston Transcript.
