Obituary

George E. Moulton, a resident of Brooklyn for the past thirty years, died at his home, 929 Greene avenue, this morning of cancer of the stomach. The deceased was born in Foxcroft, Me., November 7, 1839, and received his preliminary education at Westbrook. His preparatory course was pursued at Westbrook Seminary, and upon its completion he entered Tufts College as a freshman in 1852. In 1860 he entered Bowdoin College, where he completed his studies.
At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted and on November 20, 1861, received a commission as second lieutenant. In October, 1864, he was advanced to the grade of first lieutenant and in December of the same year was made a captain and assigned to Company A of the Thirteenth Maine Volunteers, of which Colonel Neal Dow was commanding officer. [On] January 6, 1865, he was transferred to Company B, Thirtieth Maine Volunteers, and served in Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia and Georgia. He was in General Banks' expedition up the Red River, and with General Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley. He participated in the battle of Mustand Island, Fort Eccanola, Tex., Sabine Cross Roads and Pleasant Hill, La.

In April, 1863, during the retreat from the Red River, he was stricken with typhoid-fever and was unable to resume active duty until the following August. Upon leaving St. James Hospital, New Orleans, he was assigned to the following staff positions successively: Ordnance officer at Forts Jackson and St. Phillips, assistant commissary of subsistence at New Orleans, assistant commissary of musters at Savannah, and judge advocate at Winchester, Va. He was also attached for a time to the staff of Major General Brennan. He was mustered out of service August 20, 1865.

Soon after the close of the war Mr. Moulton entered the lumber business in Chicago, but thirty years ago moved to Brooklyn where he took up a residence in the Eastern District. He soon became prominent in political and Sunday school circles. He was superintendent of All Souls Sunday School [Universalist], which was then located in the Eastern District, and on several occasions acted as grand marshal of the anniversary parade. He was at one time treasurer of the Eastern District Sabbath School Association, as well as of the Homeopathic Dispensary on South Third street. He was president of the Board of Elections from 1903 until consolidation, and also served on the Board of Education.

He was married twice. His second wife survives him, together with a daughter, Agnes May, five years of age. The funeral will be held Saturday evening at 8 o'clock and interment will take place Sunday morning in the family plot in Greenwood Cemetery.
