Pebles Hastey's Last Will and Testament
State of North Carolina, Union Couny, October first 1851

In the name of God Amen - I, Pebles Hastey, being weak in body but in and of perfect mind and memory and calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing it is appointed for all me to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament. First of all, I recommend my body to the earth and my soul to God who gave it - and as touching this worldly estate as it has pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give and devise and dispose of in the following manner and form.

First of all, I give and bequeath unto my wife Charity, a tract of land in the said county on the waters of Stewartsville Creek containing four hundred and eighty three acres, known as the Stegall tract, during her natural life and at her death to my youngest daughter, Nicy Adaline. Also unto my wife Charity, one horse and carriage, two cows her choice, all my household furniture, kitchen furniture, (illegible), farming tools. Also one Negro boy named Alfred (illegible) during her lifetime and at her death, the boy Alfred is to be sold and the money equally divided among all my children.

Also, all the above mentioned property, which I have given my wife Charity, at her decease, to be sold and equally divided among all my children excepting for Jesse.

Second, I give and bequeath unto my daughter, Polly Taylor, three hundred dollars in money to make her equal unto the rest of my children.

Third, I give and bequeath to my daughter Lucy, one Negro girl by the name of Jane, valued at four hundred dollars, also two hundred dollars in money. Also one bed of furniture, one cow and calf.

All the balance of my land and Negroes not otherwise disposed of to be sold and equally divided among all my children at my decease except Jesse. I give and bequeath to my son, Jesse Hastey, in addition to other advancements made, the sum of one dollar.

The above to be my last will and testament in witness whereof I, the said Pebles Hastey, have hereunto set my hand and seal.

Codicil to the above Will:
I, the said Pebles Hastey at and before the sealing and delivering of those present make and ordain that the land and promises and also the Negro boy Alfred, as mentioned in the foregoing will, shall not be sold as a lifetime (illegible) interest for my bargain in contract that my wife Charity may make or cause to be made. Also I will to my youngest daughter, Nicy Adaline one cow and calf, one bed furniture and one sideboard. In testimony whereof, I, the said Pebles Hastey, have hereunto set my hand and seal.
