Biography
Linus Pauling was a remarkable American chemist, biochemist, peace activist, author, and educator who made significant contributions to science and society throughout his life. Born on February 28, 1901, in Portland, Oregon, Pauling developed a passion for science at an early age. His father's pharmacy exposed him to the world of chemicals and medicine, laying the foundation for his future career.
Pauling attended Oregon State University, where he earned a degree in chemical engineering in 1922. He then pursued a Ph.D. in chemistry at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). His efforts culminated in the 1958 petition known as the "Bomb Test Petition," signed by thousands of scientists worldwide, calling for a halt to nuclear weapons testing. Although the petition did not immediately change government policy, it marked a significant moment in the intersection of science and politics.
In 1962, Linus Pauling received the Nobel Peace Prize for his activism against nuclear weapons testing, making him one of the few individuals to receive two unshared Nobel Prizes. Despite facing criticism and challenges to his reputation in the U.S. during this period, Pauling remained committed to his principles.
Later in his career, Pauling focused on the health benefits of vitamin C. His advocacy for high-dose vitamin C supplementation stirred controversy in the scientific community, with some criticizing his claims as exceeding the available evidence. Nevertheless, Pauling continued to promote the health benefits of vitamin C until his death.
