Galileo GALILEI
Biography



Born on February 15, 1564, in Pisa, Italy, he was the son of a musician named Vincenzo Galilei. From the get-go, Galileo showed a knack for math and science.

He enrolled at the University of Pisa to study medicine, but his heart was set on the stars. His passion for astronomy led him to drop out of med school and dive headfirst into the world of celestial observation. In 1609, he heard about this new invention called the telescope, and being the curious guy he was, he decided to build his own.

With his homemade telescope, Galileo turned his gaze towards the heavens and made some groundbreaking discoveries. He spotted craters on the moon, observed the phases of Venus, and discovered Jupiter's four largest moons – now known as the Galilean moons (Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto).

Galileo's observations provided strong evidence for the heliocentric model of the solar system proposed by Copernicus, where the Earth and other planets revolve around the Sun. But here's where things get spicy. See, this heliocentric idea wasn't the most popular concept at the time. The Catholic Church, in particular, wasn't too thrilled with the notion that Earth wasn't at the center of the universe.

In 1616, the Church issued a decree that declared heliocentrism "formally heretical." Galileo was warned not to promote this idea, but being the stubborn scientist he was, he didn't back down.

Fast forward to 1632 when Galileo publishes his book "Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems." This book is like dropping a science bomb on the geocentric view, and it didn't sit well with the Church. In 1633, Galileo was summoned by the Roman Catholic Inquisition, accused of heresy, and put on trial.

Facing the heat, Galileo was forced to recant his support for heliocentrism. Legend has it that after recanting, he supposedly muttered under his breath, "E pur si muove" – "And yet it moves" – referring to the Earth's motion around the Sun. Whether he actually said this or not is up for debate, but it sure adds some dramatic flair to the story.

After the trial, Galileo spent the rest of his life under house arrest, but that didn't stop him from making contributions to science. He continued his studies in physics, and in 1638, he published "Two New Sciences," a work that laid the groundwork for the science of mechanics.

Galileo Galilei, the father of modern observational astronomy, died on January 8, 1642, but his legacy lives on. Despite the bumps in the road, his work laid the foundation for the scientific method and forever changed our understanding of the cosmos.
