Biography

Gloria Vanderbilt led a fascinating and multifaceted life. Born on February 20, 1924, in New York City, she was the daughter of Reginald Vanderbilt, an heir to the Vanderbilt railroad fortune, and Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt. Tragically, her father passed away when she was just a baby, leaving her with a substantial trust fund.

Gloria Vanderbilt became the center of a highly publicized custody battle between her mother and her paternal aunt, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. The media frenzy surrounding the trial earned Gloria the nickname "poor little rich girl." Ultimately, her aunt won custody, but the experience had a lasting impact on her life and shaped her view of the world.

As she grew older, Gloria developed a keen interest in the arts. She pursued a career as an artist, actress, and fashion designer. In the 1970s, she launched a successful line of designer jeans that bore her name, creating a fashion phenomenon. The "Gloria Vanderbilt" jeans became a symbol of style and sophistication.

Beyond her career in the arts and fashion, Vanderbilt experienced a series of marriages. Her first marriage was to agent and movie producer Pat DiCicco, followed by conductor Leopold Stokowski, with whom she had two sons, Stan and Christopher. Later, she married director Sidney Lumet and then author Wyatt Cooper, with whom she had two sons, Carter and Anderson Cooper.

Tragedy struck again when her fourth husband, Wyatt Cooper, passed away during open-heart surgery in 1978. This loss had a profound impact on Vanderbilt, and she channeled her grief into her work, creating a series of paintings that expressed her emotions.

Gloria Vanderbilt's life was marked by resilience and reinvention. In addition to her artistic and fashion pursuits, she delved into writing and authored several books, including novels, memoirs, and a book of poetry. Her writing often explored themes of love, loss, and the search for identity.

Later in life, Gloria Vanderbilt became a prominent figure in the media. Her son, Anderson Cooper, is a well-known journalist and television personality. The mother-son duo shared a close bond, and Anderson often spoke publicly about their relationship.

Gloria Vanderbilt passed away on June 17, 2019, at the age of 95. Her life was a tapestry woven with wealth, fame, tragedy, and creative expression.
