Stephen HAWKING
Biography

Stephen Hawking was a brilliant theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author. He was born on January 8, 1942, in Oxford, England. Despite being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at the age of 21, which gradually paralyzed him over the years, Hawking went on to make groundbreaking contributions to the fields of physics and cosmology.

Hawking's academic journey began at the University of Oxford, where he studied physics. He later pursued his Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge, focusing on the nature of the universe. His work centered around black holes, gravitational singularity theorems, and the nature of spacetime. In 1974, he proposed Hawking radiation, a theoretical prediction that black holes should emit radiation and gradually lose mass, ultimately leading to their eventual evaporation.

Despite facing the physical challenges of ALS, Hawking continued to work and teach. In 1979, he became the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, a position once held by Sir Isaac Newton. His popular science book, "A Brief History of Time," published in 1988, became a bestseller and brought complex scientific concepts to a broad audience.

Hawking's contributions to theoretical physics earned him numerous awards and honors. He received the Albert Einstein Award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and was made a Companion of Honour by Queen Elizabeth II. He was also a fellow of the Royal Society.

Throughout his life, Hawking's communication and mobility were severely limited by ALS. Initially, he could still speak with the help of a voice synthesizer, but as the disease progressed, he lost even that ability. Despite these challenges, he continued his work, collaborated with other scientists, and remained an influential figure in the scientific community.

Stephen Hawking passed away on March 14, 2018, at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking discoveries and a commitment to making the complexities of the universe accessible to the general public. His life story is not just a tale of scientific brilliance but also one of resilience in the face of adversity.
