Pierre MOREAU dit LATAUPINE (LATOPINE)
Biography

MOREAU – Contraction of Morineau, nickname given to an individual with a more or less dark complexion, in reference to the Moorish people, encountered during the crusades. Also, from the Latin "Maurellus", from Maurus which means the Mauritanian, again the nickname of a dark-skinned individual. Finally, can come from the name of several localities in France.

Pierre Moreau-Latopine was born around 1644 in St-Hérie-de-Matha, Charente-Maritime, France. Son of Abraham Moreau and Marguerite Nauret, he married Marie-Madeleine Lemire, daughter of Jean and Louise Marsolet, on November 27, 1677 in Quebec. The couple have 13 children. Arrived in 1666 on Le Moulin d'Or, he settled in Quebec. He devoted himself to the fur trade and, at the end of his trips to the Outaouais, he became an innkeeper. He also deals with buying and selling land. In 1714, he rented the pew which he had occupied for eleven years at the Fabrique Notre-Dame. A well-to-do man, he died in Quebec on August 23, 1727 and was buried there the next day.
