Martin MOREAU dit BONNEAU
Biography



MOREAU – Contraction of Morineau, nickname given to an individual with a more or less dark complexion, in reference to the Moorish people, encountered during the crusades. Also, from the Latin "Maurellus", from Maurus which means the Mauritanian, again the nickname of a dark-skinned individual. Finally, can come from the name of several localities in France.

Martin Moreau-Bonneau was baptized on February 25, 1644 in Vernou-sur-Brenne, Indre-et-Loire, France. Son of Gaspard Moreau and Marie Gaillarde, he married the widow of Guillaume Dubeau, Jeanne Lecoq, daughter of Jacques and Jeanne Bordeleau, on January 18, 1672 in Quebec. The couple have 3 children. Arrived in 1672, he settled in St-Joseph de Charlesbourg then in Quebec. In 1680, he was the victim of a violent attack for which he obtained justice. In 1687, he is said to be in the service of the king. His death took place after June 15, 1687, the date when his daughter signed a marriage contract, and before October 22, 1688, when annuities and cents were demanded of her.
