Biography

PARADIS – Comes from the agglutination of Le Paradis, the name of several localities in France. Or even the one who lives or who is from the place called paradise, that is to say a good land, a good valley, a pleasant, sunny, green place. Pierre Paradis (1604-1675) Born in 1604 in Notre-Dame de Mortagne in the Perche, son of the cutler Jacques Paradis and Michelle Pesle, he married on February 11, 1632 Barbe Guyon, daughter of Jean Guyon and Mathurine Robin. Together they will have 11 children. They arrived in New France in 1653, and took up residence in the seigniory of Notre-Dame-des-Anges in 1654 on land of 2 arpents frontage for an annual rent of 50 sols and 2 capons. Then in 1667, Jean Madry rented to him for an annual rent of 6 deniers tourneys and a chicken of 10 sols a land of half an arpent still in the seigneury of Notre-Dame-des-Anges on which there is a house, a barn and a stable. In 1670, in his sick bed, he dictated his will: he bequeathed 20 livres to the cemetery of the poor at the Hôtel-Dieu where he asked to be buried, then 20 livres to the chapel of the Congrégation de la Sainte-Vierge, 20 livres to the church of Beauport, and everything else to his wife. But he is recovering from his illness. In 1672, he sold his share of land received as an inheritance, for the sum of 500 pounds. He died on January 29, 1675 in Saint-Pierre de l'Île d'Orléans, and was buried in the parish of Sainte-Famille.
