Biography

HÉBERT - alteration of HERBERT, from the Germanic name HARIBERTH, which comes from 'heri' which means 'glory' and 'berth' which means 'illustrious'. Louis Hébert, born in 1575 in Paris (France) and died on January 25, 1627 in Quebec (New France) is a French apothecary. He is best known as the first settler to settle in New France. Son of an apothecary and coming from a large family connected with the profession, he undertook studies for a period of five years in order to practice the same profession as his father in 1595. Between 1606 and 1613 he made two long stays in Acadia where his knowledge and his good relations with the Amerindians allow him to carry out a large inventory of the plants of the region. In 1617, he made a third trip to the New World, this time settling in the Quebec region at the invitation of Samuel de Champlain. He died on January 25, 1627 following a fall on the ice. His body is buried in the Récollets cemetery in Quebec. 2) Antoine Hébert was born around 1621 in Martaizé, Loudun, Vienne, France. He married Geneviève Lefranc (35) around 1648 in Balestre in La Haye, France. From their union were born 3 children. He arrived in Port-Royal in Acadie with his wife and brother Estienne in July 1650. He was a cooper and a farmer. He still lived in Port Royal in 1671 and 1686. He died around 1690. 3) François Hébert was born around 1618 in St-Aignan, Seine-Maritime, France. Of unknown parentage, he married Anne Le Fauconnier, of unknown parentage, on October 5 in France. From this union were born 6 children. Widowed in 1676. He married secondly Jeanne Morineau, daughter of Timothée and Renée Bitonne, on November 2, 1678 in Quebec. This union remains without posterity. Arriving in the country in 1654, he was confirmed on February 2, 1660 at Château-Richer. He lived in Ange-Gardien in 1667, then moved to the Seigneurie de Maure in 1683. He died there on February 1, 1688 and was buried the next day in Neuville. 4) Augustin Hébert-Jolicoeur was born around 1620 in Caen, Calvados in France. Son of Jean Hébert and Isabeau Troussart, he married Adrienne Duvivier, daughter of Antoine and Catherine Journet, on January 13, 1646 in Paris, France. From their union were born 4 children. This soldier from the garrison at Fort de Québec joined Sieur de Maisonneuve in Trois-Rivières in 1641 and participated with other settlers in the founding of Montréal in 1642; his name appears on the monument in the Place Royale. In 1646, he returned to France to get married and came back to settle in Montreal in 1647. He died during a fur trading trip, around 1653.
