Biography

MARTIN - From the Latin name MARTINUS, derived from MARS. Or Saint-Martin, one of the most venerated saints in the Middle Ages. This one was very popular in France because he is considered the Apostle of Gaul and his generosity is legendary. Tradition has it that he shared his mantle with a poor man who turned out to be Christ. 1) Antoine Martin was born before 1631 in St-Xiste, Montpellier, Languedoc, France. Son of Jean Martin and Isabelle Côté, he married Marie-Denise Sevestre, daughter of Charles Sevestre and Marie Pichon, in June 1646 in Quebec. From this union were born 4 children. Arrived in the country around 1645, this soldier settled first in Montreal, then in Quebec around 1649. He would have been qualified as a shoemaker in 1650, then as a gardener in 1656. He died in Quebec in May 1659. 2) Pierre Martin dit Ladouceur was born around 1666 in Bergerac in Périgord. Son of Jean Martin and Anne Desmoulins, he married Marie-Anne Limousin, daughter of Hilaire Limousin and Antoinette Lefebvre, on September 12, 1696 in Montreal. From their union were born 17 children. He is a soldier in the company of Sieur Dumesnil. He settled in Notre-Dame-des-Neiges (Montreal). In 1714, he moved to the Côte de Liesse. He died on May 4, 1742 in Montreal. 3) Joachim Martin was born around 1636 in Aytré, Charente-Maritime, France. Son of Jacques Martin and Luce Chaslut-Chalat, he married Marie-Chalifour, daughter of Paul and Jacquette Archambault, on November 5, 1662 in Quebec. The couple have no children. Widowed in 1663, he married, on June 16, 1669 in Quebec, Anne-Charlotte Petit, daughter of Pierre and Catherine-Françoise Desnaguets. The couple have 8 children. A hired laborer in La Rochelle, he arrived in 1656 and lived mainly on Île d'Orléans. In 1681, living in Petite-Auvergne, he owned 10 cattle and 15 acres of land. He died and was buried on June 30, 1690 on Île d'Orléans. 4) Barnabé Martin was born around 1636 in Acadia. His parents are unknown. He married Jeanne Pelletret, daughter of Simon and Perrine Bourg, in 1666 in Acadie. In the census of Port-Royal in 1671, he was 35 years old. They had 6 children. He died before the 1686 census. 5) Pierre Martin dit Langoumois was born around 1658, and was baptized on October 12, 1658 in Ruffec en Augoumois. Son of Gabriel Martin and Jeanne Fleurance, he married Marie-Madeleine Lemieux (age 24), daughter of Gabriel Lemieux and Marguerite Leboeuf, on March 2, 1688 in Quebec. From their union were born 9 children. He was a soldier in the company of Sieur de Monic when he arrived in the country in 1687. In 1688, he settled in Quebec and became a mason. He died on October 1, 1728 in Quebec. 6) Pierre Martin was the son of Louis and Sébastienne Coutande, of the parish of Ste-Vierge, bishopric of Poitiers. He married Joachine Lafleur in Sillery (registered in Quebec) in 1664. Their marriage was delayed because he was very ill. They had 6 children. He bought land at Cap-Rouge the same year, which he promised to pay with an annual rent of 30 pounds. In 1669, he had to part with it, unable to pay the rent. In the census of 1681, he owned 1 gun, 1 horned beast and 15 acres of land in value. He died in St-Augustin and was buried in Ste-Foy in 1713. 7) Jean Martin dit Saint-Martin was born around 1684 in France. Son of Jean Martin and Marie-Louise Jeanval, he married Anne Banlier on February 26, 1709 in Contrecoeur. Twelve children were born from their union. He is a soldier in the troops. In 1716, he was a farmer for the sieur Neveu and lived in D'Autray. He died on March 10, 1756.
